Electrifying Puerto Rico !
Puerto Rico is about a 3–hour jet ride away from Miami, and is about 100 miles long and
35 miles wide. Geography ranges from lush tropical rain forest in the north to rare tropical dry
forest in the south, from the Atlantic to the Caribbean. San Juan and several other cities bustle
with restaurants, bars, shopping malls and casinos. Loaded with history, there are many, many
land–based sights to visit.
Diving!—Parguera Divers, located in the southwest, has over 25 dive sites from Guanica to La
Parguera.
Approximately 6–7 miles offshore the famous La Parguera Wall runs for over 20 miles. The Wall
drops from 55–65 ft. to over 1500 feet. Visibility ranges from 60 to 150 ft. Average Water
temperature is about 85 F in the summer, and between 78 F to 80 F in winter. We do not
experience strong currents, and the underwater surge is very mild or non-existent. Parguera
Divers also features divesites closer to shore used for checkout dives, resort courses & night
dives. The reefs are very well kept, healthy, abundant and alive. Diving in La Parguera offers a
great variety of marine life, deep-water gorgonians and rare black coral.
Weather & Water—Year round air temperature averages—65–85 deg.F. October and
November are the wettest months bringing frequent rainstorms. Water temperature ranges
between 77 deg.F.–84 deg.F. Visibility runs between 80 to 100 feet.
Price Validity—All Package Prices are subject to change without notice, unless
Paid-In-Full. Changes may be required in the event of increases or decreases in the cost of
services imposed by hotels, dive operators, air carriers (if included in package), or other
contractors. Government taxes can change at any time.
Dive Sites
NOTE: The following are only a few of the many incredible sites visited on a regular
basis by Parguera Divers, varying in depth from 55–130fsw along the Parguera Wall,
about 7 miles from shore, which drops to 1500fsw and is over 20 miles in length. There are many
shallower sites on the way out to the wall.
- Fallen Rock—Expect the unexpected! The wall virtually drops off, leading to a huge
boulder with two huge trenches around it, filled with tropical fish such as grunts, durgeons, parrot
and angelfish. Sharks, rays and morays are frequently encountered. This site has been featured by
Rodale's Scuba Diving Magazine and Scuba Times.
- Old Buoy—The oldest dive site in La Parguera used to be marked by a buoy of the
University of Puerto Rico Marine Sciences Department. After 20 years the buoy is gone, but a
huge concrete anchor block reminds us we are not the first to gaze at the ancient coral trenches
that drop off the edge of the wall at 65fsw, leading down a gentle drop off.
- Efra's Wall—The abundance of rare black coral, forests of deep water gorgonians and
schools of black durgeons make this site one of our favorites. As we anchor and start our dive we
can see the schools of fish ready to greet us. The Wall starts at 60fsw and drops into a sheer
precipice of deep blue water.
- Chimney—The Wall offers fantastic dives, but this non-wall dive cannot be
disregarded. A small drop off leads up to a stone and coral formation in the unmistakable shape of
a chimney. The Chimney is at 80fsw and divers can swim right through. Barracudas are usually
circling that area and greet divers as they swim along. Simply a spectacular dive which should not
be missed.
- 1990—Huge Coral Mounts nested in a sandy area. Lots of marine life! The sandy
bottom invites stingrays to come along. A huge hogfish calls this dive site his home.
- Black Wall—This site is named for the abundance of rare, huge black coral gardens,
black gorgonians and schools of black durgeons that surround you during the whole dive. A sheer
wall begins at 55fsw and drops to 200fsw, providing a blue water experience full of marine life
and encrusted coral. This dive site has been featured in Rodale's, Scuba Times, PADI Underwater
Journal, Tauchen, and TV/radio documentaries and programs.
- The Aquarium—Most people just observe an aquarium, but here you can swim in it
and explore. Beautiful overhangs are home to schooling grunts. At the sandy bottom you can find
conch shells, sand dollars and a family of yellowhead jawfish. Watch out—the fish will follow you
the entire dive!
